Interview Questions

Preparing for an interview is not just about preparing for the questions that you will be asked by the interviewer, it is also about preparing intelligent questions to ask during the interview. Are your first questions about pay and bonuses? Are you more interested in holidays and benefits? Or do you simply want promotion and career opportunities?

Remember that this is a great opportunity to actually discover whether the position is right for you and if it lives up to your expectations. Many people attend interviews without thinking too much about the questions that they want to ask; they ‘play it by ear’ and see where the interview goes. This often leaves you with few questions to ask, particularly when the interview has been very comprehensive.

The key to a successful interview is to ask questions that will leave a positive impression with the interviewers.

Questions to ask about the Organisation:

Asking questions about the organisation really helps to demonstrate to the interviewer that you are interested in what they do and wish to understand their business further.

  • “What makes them a good organisation to work for?”
  • “How many employees are in the organisation?”
  • “What are the key departments within the organisation?”
  • “What is the organisation’s reporting structure?”

Questions to ask about the Position:

Understanding more about the position will help you to decide whether the role is right for you. It also shows the interviewer that you have thought about the nature of the role and that you are keen to ensure that you understand what will be required of you.

  • “How has the position been created?”
  • “What are the opportunities for training in the role?”
  • “When are they looking for someone to start?”
  • “How would you describe the character of the team?”
  • “How large is the team?”
  • “What other departments will you work with?”
  • “What is the department structure?”
  • “What are the key challenges in the role?”
  • “Can they describe a typical day for you?”

Questions to ask at the end of the interview:

  • “When do they expect to make a decision?”
  • “What is the remaining interview process?”

And finally, always thank the interviewer for taking the time to see you. Let them know that you have enjoyed the interview and (if you feel the role is right for you) that you are interested in the opportunity.
